Members of IAM District 6 and Locals 1526, 1010, 388, and 831 recently completed a community project as a part of the IAM Midwest Territory’s “IAM H.E.L.P.S. in the Community” program. H.E.L.P.S. stands for Honoring, Engaging, Lifting, Providing, and Servicing.

IAM District 6 held their annual HELPS event in support of children suffering from food insecurity. Members and their families donated their time at Meals from the Heartland, an organization in West Des Moines, Iowa, that provides pre-packed meals to children in need across the globe. Meals from the Heartland fights child hunger by empowering people to feed starving children.

The meals were packed with rice, soy and two different seasonings. During their scheduled time, the volunteers packed enough to provide 33,912 meals at a total value of nearly $10,000.

“On a day marked by dedication, teamwork, and a shared commitment to fighting child hunger, the efforts of the members of District Lodge 6 are a testament to the impact we can make,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “Together, compassion was turned into action, and it will make a real difference.”

“Our volunteers really enjoyed the event, and the atmosphere was great,” said IAM District 6 Directing Business Representative Pam Gonzales. “The staff at Meals from the Heartland were very welcoming and at one point, they told us that we were working too fast, but we were doing an awesome job. It certainly was a humbling experience to know we were making a difference in the lives of children who are in need. Thank you to Sister Kristy Kerr from Local 254 who helped organize this great event.”

Each District and Unaffiliated Local in the Midwest Territory is tasked with hosting at least one H.E.L.P.S.event per year.
