IAM International President Brian Bryant has appointed IAM Local 1725 President and longtime union activist Helena Thornton as an IAM Southern Territory Special Representative. The appointment is effective June 1, 2024.

“Helena embodies the spirit of justice and dedication that the IAM stands for,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “Her journey is one of hope and inspiration for all members. We are confident that her leadership will contribute greatly to the IAM Southern Territory.”

Helena’s journey with the IAM began in 2006 with US Airways in Charlotte, N.C., as a part-time fleet service agent. Just two years after joining the IAM, she was elected a Shop Steward in 2008. Her first attempt at running for Victory Lodge 1725 Conductor Sentinel in 2010 ended in a narrow loss by only three votes, but she successfully ran again for Conductor Sentinel in 2013.

Thornton was a delegate for Local 1725 at the 2012 Grand Lodge Convention in Toronto and was active in the Transportation, Women’s, and Human Rights conferences. In 2016, she was elected as Local 1725’s Recording Secretary, where she helped form the Community Service Committee.

“Helena’s extensive experience and commitment to our members make her an invaluable addition to our team,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “Her work ethic and passion for service will strengthen our efforts in the Southern Territory.”

Her outstanding contributions were recognized when she received the Community Service Award from the Women’s Department at the IAM Women’s Rising Conference.

In 2022, Helena made history by being elected as the first woman president of IAM Local 1725, a testament to her leadership and the respect among her peers.
