The IAM has “serious concerns” about the nomination of Nikki Haley to the airplane maker’s board. Haley, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and governor of South Carolina, is well known for making anti-union statements and inserting herself into workers’ decisions on the job.
As governor, she publicly opposed a union for workers at Boeing South Carolina. A group of Flight Line Technicians later voted overwhelmingly to join the IAM, but the company still refuses to bargain.
“The IAM has serious concerns about the nomination of Nikki Haley to Boeing’s board,” said IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. “As governor of South Carolina, Haley had a record of using anti-union rhetoric and inserting politics into working people’s decisions. The freedom to join a union is a fundamental human right and the best way to protect workers and their families. We hope that her past statements on unions do not cloud her decision-making while serving on Boeing’s Board of Directors.”

“The Machinists Union has always been a critical part of Boeing’s accomplishments,” said Martinez. “We are proud that 35,000 IAM members make Boeing one of the most successful and largest aerospace companies in the world.”
